The track is called Nulunga Walking Track, and there are lovely beach and rock platform views from it. We are holidaying nearby, and I found these rocks too good: bit rushed, though, as the tide was incoming! And the sun was waning.

Lobster Jack Beach
I am currently holiday with hubby and we are travelling like grey nomads in our motorhome. (I say 'like' cause I'm not grey, yet.) I've bought my old box easel and I'm having fun painting in oils. Normally I've chosen acrylics or watercolour for these travelling trips, but oils are so easy by comparison.
This lovely little beach is near our caravan park on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. We originally wanted to stay for only one night, but it's so peaceful and pleasant, we've been here 5 nights so far!!

It's based on the history of the Recherche Bay area, where a French Expedition
visited in 1793 to search for their lost hero: La Perouse.

Searching for La Perouse
A view of Recherche Bay, Tasmania Australia.
This bay is almost at the bottom of the world! It is the furthermost point that a car, and a stroke survivor (my husband, Bob) could walk to. We were there in February 2016, and I painted and photographed the site for a future project.
This painting is number one of this project: it is referencing the visit of a French expedition:
"Recherche Bay located on the extreme south-eastern corner of Tasmania, Australia. It was a landing place of the d’Entrecasteaux expedition to find missing explorer La Pérouse. It is named in honour of the Recherche, one of the expedition's ships."
Sadly, La Perouse was no where near here: he had died a few years earlier on one of the islands in the Pacific.
My figures are like the young French sailors who spent 26 days exploring the area, collecting samples for the scientists on the expedition.

It's just far enough away for the first overnight stop. This was painted en plein air in the heat of January.

Ti Tree Snake Gully
Sitting next to this lovely grove of ti-trees I was happily painting, with hubby
taking photos. The manager drove passed looking concerned but didn't stop.
Later he asked if we'd seen the black snake, normally lies in that spot!

Looking to Summer, en plein-air.
I like to paint 'plein-air' when travelling in our motorhome. We have travelled north to Brisbane to inspect a mobility scooter for Bob, and have been slowly returning to Sydney with two night stopovers. Urunga is a small beach town, with an impressive harbour and mangrove tidal lakes.
This painting started in sunshine, and ended with rain! and a mad scramble back to the shore from my rocky perch. And the rain effected the 'interactivity' of the acrylic paint, as it started to run more than I intended. But as often happens, accidents can produce interesting results.

Bridport Warm Water
On our tour of Tasmania, I loved painting the rocks and blue-green waters around the north east side of the island. It as crystal clear water, and such a warm temperature for swimming.
If anyone is interested in visiting Australia, I suggest you spend a month or two in Tasmania. In a motorhome! It has the same attractions as the mainland without the hundreds of kilometres in-between stops.

Lagoon Stairs
A painting from my Tasmania Travels: I painted this 'plain air' then finished it in the studio. I think this technique suits me: especially painting on paper. It's strong and receptive to watercolour techniques, as well as being good for think texture later. Acrylics dry fast, and the works can be stored in an art folder as we travel in the motorhome.

Breakers at Chain of Lagoons Beach
I painted this larger work at the beach in Tasmania. It was done 'plain air' with a bit of fiddling back at the motorhome. The rocks are always my point of interest as they look great, and recent scientists have linked them to the North America! Who'd a thought!?!

Early Morning Rhine
I've had fun re-working this watercolour. It is a typical view of the Rhine from the ship, looking upstream into the morning sun and mist. It was October and the sun was low. Adding the acrylic paint with a palette knife bought the scene to life. Might be a turning point for me.

Loved travelling through Tassie, as the distances were much shorter than on the mainland, and the summer was very mild.

Recherche Cold Waves
I painted this while perched on the rocks. It was a great position, high and dry! The sea was cooler as we were close to the Antartic! (Bob took a pic of me which I'm using now as my profile pic.)

Five Mile Beach in Tasmania.
Five Mile Beach. Such an ordinary name for a beautiful expanse of seaside in Tasmania.
We have been touring the small island at the bottom of Australia for 5 weeks (February-March) and I
painted a few works like this tree study along the way.
Husband Bob and I have bought a motor home, and this was our first big trip.
Can recommend this type of holiday: freedom to choose a new destination every day.

Waiting for Rain
Our backyard dam is only half full, and we know that rain is coming next week.
It will make a difference, as we use the water for our garden.
I painted this in the midday sun, with only a few bites from ants..
no sign of the death adder that crossed my path last month.
It disappeared down towards this dam, so it's here somewhere!

Kiama in the Morning Sun
At a little cove called Easts Beach, Kiama, south of Sydney.
I was painting while perched on the rocks, but had to move back as the tide came in.
We were staying in our motorhome at a 'holiday park' nearby. (BIG4 Easts Beach Holiday Park)
Very quiet and peaceful in the spring.

Rothamburg: a 'plain air' under difficult circumstances. I had left my water container behind, and had to flood one half of the palette from a water bottle. A messy sketch, but a good memory of a very cute German town.

Bamburg was a surprise: just a modern shopping spot, I thought, until we turned a corner and discovered a medieval town built on a confluence of waterways.
"The Canal of Gold"
And wonderful Amsterdam: just a quick water tour of the canals, before we were bussed away to our ship in Utrecht. I was sad that I had no time here to catch up with Ella Arps, from The Arps Gallery. Next time!!

Le Tour Near the Coast

Le Tour de France: Descending the Alps
Lots of downhill action, such fun to watch (from Australia) if you sit really close to the TV. I get motion sick sometimes!! This is a smaller painting than my others, it matches last years size.

Rain on Tour
Not many rainy days this year. I love them, as the reflections and the steam make for great atmosphere. Not sure the riders are that keen, although the hot days seem so uncomfortable!
